LiDAR

Whether robotics, mobility or automotive - we supply the right LiDAR optics.

LiDAR technology opens up a whole range of possible applications, whether in traffic monitoring, automotive, air traffic or wind energy. For example, LiDAR is increasingly replacing radar as a measuring instrument for mobile and stationary speed measurements.

In principle, all radar measurement principles can be mapped by LiDAR. Laser rangefinders for crafts, construction and surveying also work with LiDAR technology. LiDAR systems are currently attracting increased attention in the field of driver assistance systems for automobiles and "automated driving".

The systems used here are mostly compact sensor modules that are primarily used for obstacle detection. In the air, in the latest generation of passenger aircraft, LiDAR systems are increasingly being used to detect turbulence and wind shear at close range.

Modern LiDAR systems

In the wind energy industry, LiDAR is used in addition to acoustic measurement methods to measure horizontal and vertical wind speeds and directions and transmit them to the control centre for optimal adjustment of the wind turbines.

Modern LiDAR systems are small and light and can be easily transported or set up and dismantled. This also makes them interesting for short-term measurements, e.g. when searching for a location or for measuring the power curves of wind turbines, which means that a further spread of LiDAR technology in this area is pre-programmed. The use of LiDAR systems is also increasing in the offshore sector. There are already installed measuring devices on offshore platforms as well as the first prototypes of buoy-based LiDAR wind measuring devices.

LiDAR in mobile communications

The iPad Pro and iPhone 12 Pro have been available on the market since October 2020. Both smartphones can measure spatial depths indoors and outdoors with LiDAR within a range of five metres.

LiDAR in robotics

LiDAR systems have been used in robotics for object recognition and environment detection for several years. In addition, they are also used for remote gas detection and airborne leak testing of natural gas pipelines through the reliable, laser-based detection of methane in air layers near the ground.
