ALQUA uses AI to automate quality assurance and other parts of micro-optics production at GD Optics. Production times are shortened and waste and CO2 emissions are reduced.
Project details
Digital innovation and technology
Quality assurance in the production of optical lenses is a time-consuming, largely manual process. This is inefficient and also highly prone to errors, which can lead to incorrect quantities and delivery delays. Due to the high demands of the processing industry, efficient and precise quality assurance is a decisive factor for competitiveness. Previous methods for automated defect detection are either too expensive, too time-consuming or not precise enough to identify specific defect types and optimize the production process.
ALQUA combines an AI-supported system for visual defect analysis with direct feedback to adjust production parameters. This holistic system, consisting of ALQUA-QS and ALQUA-Control, enables automated, precise defect detection and process optimization, which is not yet available on the market.
A high-resolution digital microscope is used, which is combined with artificial intelligence methods, including deep learning models. This combination of technologies will enable precise defect detection and classification. In addition, a reinforcement learning approach is used to optimize process parameters in order to improve the manufacture of new products.
Scope of application
The ALQUA project can be used in a variety of practical application scenarios. Improved quality assurance and process optimization have a direct impact on sustainability and competitiveness. By using state-of-the-art AI and reinforcement learning technologies, the production of optical lenses is revolutionized and adapted to the requirements of Industry 4.0.
Project participants
The ALQUA project unites GD Optics with its expertise in optical manufacturing with the business informatics experts Prof. Dr. Michael Guckert and Prof. Dr. Thomas Farrenkopf from THM. GD Optics develops high-precision optical components and attaches great importance to innovation and sustainability. The experts at THM bring extensive experience in the fields of AI, digitalization and automation, supported by strong networks such as hessian.AI. The interdisciplinary project consortium will contribute its accumulated experience to this challenging technology project.
